10 Minute Slipcase

The 10 minute slipcase is a lightweight temporary slipcase made from 3mm card stock.

This page has been written as a resource for a Victorian Bookbinders' Guild meeting held on Tuesday 23rd June 2026.

Materials

3mm card

Instructions

  1. Measure the height (H), length (L) and width (W) of the book and add 1mm to each.

    A = W +1mm
    B = H + 1mm
    C = L + 1mm

  2. Using the formulas below, calculate the size of card required and cut down a piece of card accordingly. Although grain direction hasn't been mentioned in previous variations of this slipcase it is recommended to ensure the grain is running short-length of the piece of card, which will be the same direction as the book's spine when complete. If you don't have a piece of card long enough for your book's size see variations below.

    Length = (C-5mm) + C + A + C + (C-5mm)
    Height = A + B + A

  3. With a pencil draw the following lines using the measurements above.
